Under Construction Pages on Your Firm's Site

In your time on the web, you’ve undoubtedly stumbled across an “under construction” page. All too often, these place holders include a generic message to visitors to “check back soon” along with a photo of a construction cone or a stick figure in a hard hat. While some of these graphics may be cute, these templates don’t help the visitor learn a thing about your practice.

If you’re in the process of developing a new site for your firm, you might be tempted to save time and money, and simply put up one of these placeholder pages (often provided by your domain registrar at little to no cost).  It’s important to remember, however, that every interaction matters and a generic under construction page makes for a forgettable first impression.  Instead, work with you web developer to create a single landing page that includes the following information:

  • Your firm’s name and contact information
  • Your logo and tagline (if available at this point in the process)
  • The name of at least one attorney who is responsible for the content (this may be required by your state’s Rules of Professional Conduct)
  • A short blurb about who you are and what exactly you do
  • A notice that your full site is coming soon with an invitation to contact you directly before then with any questions (this will let visitors know that you’re open for business while your site undergoes this transformation).

Whenever possible, we also recommend that you create a meta description which consists of a one-sentence overview of your firm. While your one-page holder site won’t get top placement in the SERPS, this may show up in the results pages when a colleague or referral does a search for your firm’s name.
